From Beaded Lizards to Business Leaders: The Surge of 90's Inspired Independence

A hand holding a handmade beaded lizard, symbolizing early entrepreneurial endeavors and creative independence.

In the early 90's, a surge of toys were taking the world by storm. Beanie Babies and Poly Pockets were all the rage, Pogs was an established social currency, Tamagotchis were seriously testing our levels of commitment, and you couldn't wait to get your hands on the latest Furby.

The air was filled with the sounds of boy bands and the smell of Cucumber Melon body spray, and the internet was starting to become an addicting social enterprise. This vibrant, buzzing little world wasn't just our childhood; it was where our imaginations grew exponentially, and where some (like myself) first felt the thrill of creative independence.

The result? A thriving beaded lizard business in the 2nd grade. Yep, for $1 you could choose the color and I would hand make your very own lizard buddy. It may have not been the most lucrative business model, and one that was short-lived, but it was worth it. The seed had been planted. I'd had my taste of the hustle, and I'd eventually find my purpose as a creative entrepreneur.

The Spark of Independence

Being an adult today has meant embracing a new era of freedom and self-determination that I wholeheartedly believe began with us back then -- the 90s kids. For many of us, the transition into adulthood meant challenging traditional career paths we were told to follow. It's meant embracing the idea that we could create our own paths and forge our own futures.

For Millennials, this shift towards entrepreneurship has been a natural progression of independence, taking control of our lives and careers, driven by a desire for flexibility, work-life balance, and the opportunity to make a positive impact on our terms. So, I'm not surprised when I read that 48% of Gen Z'ers already have launched their own side hustles, according to a recent Microsoft study. They're highly adaptable, tech savvy, and arguably even more fearless to challenge conventional norms.

Beyond the Status Quo

Many of us were sold a dream that no longer exists -- or maybe never did(?). Much like our parents, we were told to follow a straight path -- go to school, get a degree, secure a stable job, and climb the corporate ladder -- only to realize that this structure was designed to create a workforce society rather than encourage independent thinkers and doers, or necessarily nurture our true passions.

Don't get me wrong, having a secure job within a business that you enjoy is a wonderful thing. If you're happy and getting the fulfillment you deserve out of your work and it's environment -- then hats off to you! We're just pointing out that times are a' changing, and that it's no longer just a "cute" idea to start your own biz, it's a strong competitor to the corporate 9-to-5 -- and we're here for it!

So for all those who have ventured off into the unknown, steering their own ship and pioneering their own path -- we applaud you! You are a welcome change to the idealized picture of the past. So, keep shaping your industries and pushing boundaries, and by supporting each other, we'll build a more resilient, inclusive, and prosperous future for all.

Cheers!
